General setup, access to software
Hosts or instances
- Three instances: pouta1, pouta2 and pouta4
- pouta1 and pouta2 are for students (12 core, 45 GB RAM)
- pouta4 is the disk (NFS) server and for downloading data (8 core, 30 GB RAM)
Disks
- All share a common home directory (
/nfshome) that is served by pouta4 - All have a faster local disk (
/vol/local), every home directory has a linklocal → /vol/local/userx. Naturally the files are visible only in that particular pouta[124] server. - Everyone can read any file by default (unless you use chmod)
- Disk usage can be monitored by
df -H - Please avoid using /tmp for storing large temporary files, use
~/local/instead
Software
- To use Scisoft, type
scisoftin the terminal where you will run IRAF and friends - Editors:
emacs, vim, pluma - Browser:
firefox - PDF, PS viewer:
atril - Image viewer:
gliv
Data
- Data from observations go automatically to
/nfshome/data - Copy the file you are working on first to your home directory
- Teachers, tutors and observers: I'll give you the password for the data account (only in pouta4!) for emergencies…
